Pablo Artal studied physics at the University of Zaragoza and obtained his doctorate at the CSIC \u201cInstituto de Optica\u201d under the supervision of Javier Santamaria. He was a doctoral student at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and then at the Institut d'Optique in Orsay, France. He was a researcher at the Instituto de Optica (CSIC) in Madrid, and in 1994, he became the first professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, Spain, where he founded the \u201cLaboratorio de Optica\u201d. Pablo Artal has long been involved in collaborative research in laboratories in Europe, Australia, South America, and the USA. This included a two-year research leave in Rochester (USA) and Sydney (Australia).
Doctor Artal\u2019s scientific interests include the optics of the eye and retina and the development of optic and electronic imaging techniques for use in optics, ophthalmology, and biomedicine. Pablo Artal is responsible for highly innovative advances in optical studies of the eye and has greatly contributed to our understanding of factors that limit the human visual resolution. Several of his findings and concepts in the area of ophthalmological equipment have recently been implemented in instruments and devices that are now used in clinical ophthalmology.
He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers which accumulated over 7800 citations (H-index: 46), presented over 200 contributions in international conferences, and gave approx. 150 seminars in research institutions around the world. He was elected as a fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in 1999, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in 2009 and 2013, and the European Optical Society (EOS) in 2014.
In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Edwin H. Land Medal for his scientific contribution to the development of diagnostic and corrective alternatives in visual optics. The award was established by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS & T) in honor of Edwin H. Land. The medal is awarded in recognition of pioneering work supported by scientific research, resulting in the creation of new inventions, technologies, and products. In 2014, Pablo Artal received an Advanced Research grant from the European Research Council. In 2015, he received the \u201cKing Jaime I\u201d Award for New Technologies (applied research). He is a co-inventor of 25 international patents in the field of optics and ophthalmology. Doctor Artal is a co-founder of three spin-off companies that develop their own concepts and ideas.
