W. Fukała Lecture

Wincenty Fukała (1847-1895)

Pioneer of refractive surgery

Born into a Polish family in the town of Zhovkva in Galicia (today’s Ukraine)

Studied in Vienna where he specialised in ophthalmology under Prof. von Arlt

Performed the first refractive operation (clear-lens extraction in high myopia) in the history of ophthalmology (Fukała operation) in 1887, and by the end of 1889 had treated 16 patients in this way

Professor of Ophthalmology at UAB and UIC, Medical Director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, and President of the Barraquer Institute.

Holder of the Joaquin Barraquer Chair, Training Director of the MIR Ophthalmology Unit, and President of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER).

Author of 7 books, 57 book chapters, and over 130 scientific articles, mainly on anterior segment diseases and surgery.

Over 4,500 hours of teaching experience, having trained more than 100 ophthalmology residents.

President of the 36th World Ophthalmology Congress (WOC2018) and member of more than 30 scientific societies.

Has received many awards including the Gold Medal awarded by the Indian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Boberg-Ans Award from the Danish Ophthalmological Society

Professor Zbigniew Zagórski

“The importance of the ocular surface in the surgical correction of presbyopia”

Outstanding surgeon – performed over 20.000 ocular surgeries during his surgical career

Head of Professor Krwawicz’s Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Lublin, 1991 – 2006

Author of around 200 scientific publications and 5 books on ophthalmology

In 1998, Professor opened the first Eye Surgery Centre in Nałęczów, followed by similar centres in Rzeszów, Kraków, Nowy Sącz and Luck (Ukraine)

Currently, the OCHO Medical Group has locations in Kraków, Nałęczów, Nowy Sącz, Rzeszów, Lublin, Lubartów and Zwoleń.
