Prof. dr. Reda Žemaitienė is Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hospital of LUHS, Kaunas Clinics. She is also Head of Cornea and Uveitis Sector at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hospital of LUHS. Prof. Dr. Reda Žemaitienė has more than 20 years of scientific and pedagogical experience at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. She is a highly experienced senior anterior eye segment diseases surgeon, including cataract and glaucoma surgeries.
R. Žemaitienė obtained a doctorate degree studying the efficacy of different intraocular lenses and cataract surgery methods in 2004. In 2017 she gained the position of associate professor and in 2018, the pedagogical degree of a professor.
The main research areas are: Anterior ocular surface pathologies, cataract, inflammation diseases, myopia, rare eye diseases.
Prof. Reda Žemaitienė is a member of Anterior Segment Rare Eye Disease group and the representative of the Hospital of LUHS in European Reference Network on Rare Eye Diseases (ERN-EYE). Since 2020, prof. Reda Žemaitienė has been a representative of Lithuania in European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) and since 2023, she has been a national representative in European Ophthalmological Society (SOE) board. In 2017-2018 she was a member of international, expert-led consensus initiative on Fundamentals of Care in Uveitis (FOCUS). She is a member in Experts panels for ERN-EYE paediatric keratoconus guidelines preparation and for Diagnosis and Management of Aniridia: An ERN-EYE Clinical Consensus Statement preparation. She is also board member of Lithuanian Ophthalmological Society and a member of Lithuanian Glaucoma Society, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCR), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology ( ARVO), European Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease Specialists (EuCornea), and member of Tear Research Network.
Professor R. Žemaitienė is a co-author of 7 textbooks, 3 of which have been compiled by her. Professor is a co-author of more than 160 scientific articles. 42 articles are indexed referenced in the Web of Science database and 21 articles referenced in other databases.
